Hyundai Motor said it has decided to name the exclusive electric car, which will be released sequentially from 2021, as IONIQ. Hyundai Motor launches a separate electric car lineup brand, which is one of its willingness to secure global leadership in the rapidly growing electric car market.

Brand name Ionic is meant to inherit the existing Ionic heritage, which symbolizes future-oriented but pure eco-friendly technology. Ionic is a combination of ions that generate energy by electrical force and Unique, which means Hyundai's originality.

The direction that the Ionic brand pursues is 'Progress electrified for connected living'. Rather than just focusing on electricization technology, we will focus on giving customers a new mobility experience. Ionic New Name System and Lineup
Ionic plans to have a dedicated electric car lineup of three types by 2024: a semi-mid-sized CUV, a mid-sized sedan and a large SUV. The first car is a semi-mid-sized CUV that will be introduced in 2021 with the motif of '45' concept car. 45 is a concept car that reinterprets Hyundai's Pony Coupe in a modern way and was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany in 2019.

In 2022, a mid-sized sedan based on a concept car called Prophecy will be released. Propecie, which was first unveiled online in March, features an aerodynamic, flowing elegant silhouette design and excellent spatiality. A large SUV will be released by 2024.

The Ionic brand introduces a new naming system that combines 'numbers' that represent the level of the car in the brand name 'Ionic'. It is an alphanumeric method that combines characters and numbers, which is intuitive, easy to expand, and is capable of global use.

Under the new name system, the semi-mid-sized CUV to be released in 2021 will be named Ionic 5 (IONIQ 5), the mid-sized sedan to be released in 2022 will be Ionic 6 (IONIQ 6), and the large SUV to be released in 2024 will be named IONIQ 7 (IONIQ 7). Existing Ionic vehicles (hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric cars) are not included in the Ionic brand, which applies only to dedicated electric vehicles.

In addition, the Ionic brand is a lineup brand that is applied only to dedicated electric cars, so it is different from the high-performance brand N that can be derived from various models.

Ionic, a dedicated electric car lineup brand, plans to have a high level of product competitiveness in design, performance and space. Ionic's design concept is 'Timeless value', which means pure and refined design to have permanence regardless of time.

One of the key elements of design identity is Parametric Pixel. We will introduce a unique design that can be recognized at a glance and at a future-oriented by applying geometric pixels to lamps in a way that has never been tried by any brand.
